Practical Suggestions for Gaining Trust

  • Providing choice and operating from a person-centered framework are fundamental to avoid re-traumatizing
  • Understand concept of trauma informed practice to enhance our ability to work with people in a way that eliminates further harm and builds trust to support recovery (resources available or discussed in module…) (for more specifics please see Poole, N. 2012)
  • Understand that Health and Mental Health systems stigmatize people with mental health disorders
  •  Be aware that people receiving services and their supporters internalize this stigma and respond as stigmatized individuals
  • A helpful strategy is to collaboratively explore and focus on each person’s individual strengths and abilities with respect and compassion.
  • Understand the therapeutic relationship(s) is a collaborative partnership and requires the practitioner to follow through on items discussed or decided upon to maintain trust.
