Domain B related to professional skills and Competence B.1 centers on “ethical, legal practices, and professional behavior” which includes the need to understand professional boundary issues and maintain boundaries with individuals, families/loved ones/natural supports and communities. Helping individuals we serve and their loved ones set and maintain boundaries is an essential PSR competency.
Just like the previous topic, discussing how, when and gaining permission to involve Family, Friends, Loved Ones and Supporters and documenting this work is critical to our work while acknowledging that relationships and setting boundaries are important for maintaining good health and safety for everyone. Considering the cultural implications of this work is equally valuable as PSR competency Domain A outlines the value of learning from individuals about the culture, values, need preferences and wishes regarding involving others in their care. Competence A.5 offers additional important guidance when working with Indigenous populations and individuals.
It may be relevant to discuss the many different kinds of relationships that exist while noting that supportive relationships are important for good health because they provide a connection to the world outside ourselves and offer a place to turn for support and help when we need these.
