Domain D focuses on “supporting participation for all” and Competency D.1 is relevant to this section as we work “with individuals to maximize engagement in work, leisure, education, and communities of choice.” Practitioners will be aware of the evidence relating to health and wellness and be able to successfully engage individuals in promoting their health and wellness. Practitioners will be aware of local resources and support individuals to engage in meaningful activities of choice. Domain E recommends practitioners build competence in developing “effective community partnerships” E. 2 to support recovery-oriented communities and systems.

Leisure and recreation are important for physical and mental health. Taking time for ourselves can reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. Taking part in recreational activities with friends and or family members can be especially beneficial because this increases our social connections and helps to reduce loneliness and isolation.

It may be helpful to share that If the person makes changes to their activity level they may experience some discomfort and it may be helpful to seek some support or a friend to help you during this transition identifying concerns and needed supports for this change. For example, a person may wish to join a local artist group but may be shy at attending the first few classes – identifying what the person might need to support this change could involve a peer /loved one accompanying them for a few sessions until they are comfortable. Asking the person to identify something they did in the past, were good at or really want to try could be a helpful first step.

Some ways to take part in recreational activities include:

  • Talk walks, especially in nature if possible
  • Meet with friends and family for leisure activities
  • Join activities at the local community centre or other venue
  • Join a fitness club or centre
  • Work in a community garden

Some mental health benefits of recreational activities include:

  • Can help to avoid negative choices by exploring better ways to use free time
  • Improve social skills
  • Foster positive experiences
  • Regain confidence
  • Improve mood and reduce anxiety
  • Help develop tools to better handle social anxiety, depression, anger, and bipolar disorder
  • Encouragement to embrace life and develop a more positive outlook.
  • Help you feel less alone
