Medication

As a PSR practitioner you will know about the signs and symptoms of mental illness and substance use and the impact on daily life such as cognitive challenges and the impact of Stigma. (Competence C.1 & 2) understanding “mental illness and its impact on individuals” …and “the determinants of health” includes knowing basic information about medications, their risks and benefits and reasons to discontinue. This knowledge will be an asset for people seeking services who may wish to reflect on their medication regime and its impact on their daily life and activities. The following information may be useful to discuss with the person seeking services and their loved one(s).

People with mental health disorders may be prescribed medication to help with their symptoms. But, some people may not understand why they have been prescribed these medications or may not want to take them. All of us have a right to be informed about our health conditions and treatments that are recommended to help with these conditions. This is a basic right and includes those with mental health conditions.

Mental health workers are often asked questions about medications and it is important for workers to be able to help clients understand the reasons for being prescribed medications. Mental health workers should encourage their clients to learn about their medications, including:

  • Use for each medication
  • Benefits of the medication
  • Risks associated with the medication
  • Side effects that may occur with the medication
  • Interactions with other licit and illicit substances, and prescriptions and over the counter drugs

Those who work in mental health settings should become educated about the different kinds of medications for common disorders and be able to speak generally about the benefits and challenges clients might face when prescribed medication.

Two excellent resources for gaining a basic understanding about medications for mental health disorders are:

It is also important to recognize that clients may have questions their mental health worker can’t answer. When this happens, the best way to help their clients is to encourage them to speak with their doctor about their medication so they can make the best possible choices with regard to their medications.
