Managing Symptoms & Healthy Living

Doman C outlines components of competence regarding implementing Recovery-oriented PSR practices, Specifically, competence C.6 speaks to implementing PSR evidence based practices (EBP) (one EBP is supporting health and wellbeing) and the need for collaboratively evaluating progress. Thus, practitioners will offer assessment and help people build individual strategies for managing symptoms and healthy living (such as diet, stress, sleep, recreation, social connections, managing finances) and evaluate progress and need for change with the individual.

Initially discussing the importance of (and evidence for) actively managing our physical and mental health by getting enough sleep, eating well, maintaining contact with family and friends, and managing stress is an essential first step.

Supporting the person to develop a wellness plan to acknowledge what they are doing well and ensure enough support to prevent relapse and support our mental wellness is an important skill for practitioners. As you discuss developing a personal plan with someone some essential components (that can help with assessment of strengths and needs and strategies) might include helping the person in:

  • Identifying “triggers” or things that cause symptoms to flare up
  • Identifying and recognizing early warning signs when symptoms are flaring up
  • Identifying successful personal coping strategies and resources that can help to maintain mental health and prevent flare ups or relapse. A few examples might be; and importantly each person’s list will be unique:
    • Eating a healthy and balanced diet
    • Getting enough or extra sleep
    • Engaging in meaningful spiritual activities
    • Taking medications as prescribed
    • Maintaining contact with family, friends and supporters
    • Maintaining a regular exercise routine, such as walking
