Underlying Principles
- People in their early and prime working and school years are the hardest hit by the impact of mental illness.
- Youth and young adults with mental health disabilities face significant barriers in educational attainment and employment
- In fact, over 50% of students with a mental health condition drop out of high school and experience high rates of longer delays in entering post secondary school and have high drop-out rates.
- Compared to other disability groups, those with mental illness employment rates have improved in the last couple of decades.
- It is well known that educational attainment is strongly linked with employment status and wage earnings (Ringeisen et al. 2017)
- People with a job are healthier, have higher self-esteem, and have higher standards of living (WHO, 2022 & MHCC, 2019).
- Educational attainment is strongly associated with better health outcomes—those with more education report higher levels of health and show lower morbidity, mortality, and disability. In contrast, lower educational levels are linked with poor self-reported health, shorter life expectancy, and worse survival when ill (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2020)
- There are effective ways to support people living with serious mental illness to be successful in education and subsequently gain the skills needed to pursue sustainable employment.
