Setting boundaries for different kinds of relationships

The boundaries and limits a person has may vary based on the kind of relationship but may also vary for different people within a kind of relationship. Many things contribute to the kind of boundaries each person has with another person or a group, some similarities exist for all.

Boundaries include regard for each person’s values, desires, needs, limits.

Basic Rights: There are some basic rights every person is entitled to:

  • You have a right to say no without feeling guilty
  • You have a right to be treated with respect
  • You have a right to make your needs as important as others
  • You have a right to be accepting of your mistakes and failures
  • You have a right not to meet others’ unreasonable expectations of yourself.
